Kashmir highway through despite rain, historic Mughal road closed

SRINAGAR :  Despite rain, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for traffic while the historic Mughal road was closed due to fresh snowfall.
Traffic was plying from both sides normally despite intermittent rain during the past 24 hours on the 300-km-long highway, a traffic police official told.
He said hundreds of vehicles, carrying essentials for Kashmir valley, and passengers left Jammu this morning. Similarly trucks carrying fruit to different mandis of the country also left different parts of the valley this morning.
However, the historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch has been closed due to fresh snowfall.
There was one to two feet of fresh snowfall at different places, including Pir-ki-Gali, Baffalo and Dubjan, he said adding the road was slippery forcing authorities to close the road as a precautionary measure.
Official sources said hundreds of vehicles, including trucks, remained stranded on both sides of the road.   The local authorities have already pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to clear the snow and put through the road. However, only stranded vehicles will be allowed to move before allowing fresh traffic. (UNI)
