Kashmir highway reopens, yatris allowed through Mughal road

SRINAGAR:
Traffic was resumed on the 300-km-long Srinagar- Jammu this evening after remaining suspended since yesterday due to landslides, triggered by incessant rains.
Meanwhile, vehicles, carrying Amarnath pilgrims, who had paid obeisance and darshan of self made Ice Shivlingam, were allowed to move to Jammu via historic Mughal road.
A traffic police official told reporters that traffic was resumed on the highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, this evening after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) cleared the landslides. Stranded vehicles, including those carrying Amarnath pilgrims were allowed to proceed towards Baltal and Nunwan Pahalgam base camps.
However, no fresh vehicle was allowed from Srinagar or Jammu. He said light vehicles will ply from both sides on the highway tomorrow, subject to road and weather condition. However, heavy vehicle, including carrying amaranth pilgrims will ply from Jammu to Srinagar only.
As the highway remained closed since yesterday and a large number of pilgrims were stranded at Nunwan Pahalgam and Baltal, it was decided to allow yatra traffic on Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch.
A senior police officer said large number of vehicles, carrying pilgrims, left Shopian for Jammu via Mughal road after proper security and other arrangements had been made for safe journey of yatris. (AGENCIES)
