SRINAGAR, Dec 10: Residents of Kangan town in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, today demanded immediate restoration of the drainage network passing through the main market.
The residents said that the drainage system has become dilapidated, causing inconvenience for people visiting the area’s main commercial hub. They mentioned that the main drain is broken in several places, leading to the accumulation of wastewater, which fills the market with a foul smell. “The drainage system is so dilapidated that during the summer, it stinks, driving away visitors,” a local resident said.
The residents added that they have raised the issue multiple times with the concerned officials, but to no avail. “We have raised the issue with the Roads and Buildings Department to restore the drainage system, as the open pits could lead to a mishap,” another local resident said.
Executive Engineer Road and buildings department Kangan,Zahoor Ahmad, said that they are currently constructing an alternate road up to the Akhal bridge, where a new drainage system will be built along the road to improve the existing one. “The reconstruction of the entire drainage network can be carried out by the BRO, but we are working on an alternate road up to the Akhal bridge, and we are also constructing new drainage along it. This will address the blockage and increase the waterway capacity,” an official said.
