SRINAGAR, Apr 10: Residents of Kandi in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district today raised concern over the deteriorating condition of a key road and alleged deficiencies in local healthcare services, urging authorities to take immediate corrective measures.
The locals said the main road connecting Nutnussa Highway to Kandi, constructed around three years ago under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) need urgent repair.
They alleged that the road’s condition has worsened to the extent that travel has become time-consuming and hazardous for residents.
“Though the road was constructed just three years ago, its condition appears decades old,” said a local resident, adding that another stretch from Higher Secondary School to Baba Muqam has not been macadamized at all, affecting over 100 households in the area.
Residents said potholes and damaged patches have not only increased travel time but also caused damage to vehicles and posed risks to patients requiring urgent medical attention.
Muhammad Ramzan Magray, a local, alleged that substandard material was used in construction, stating that a journey that should take 15 minutes now takes nearly an hour due to the road’s condition.
Despite repeated representations to the concerned departments, including the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, residents said no tangible action has been taken so far.
They have urged the Deputy Commissioner Kupwara to intervene and ensure immediate repairs and proper maintenance. The residents also flagged serious issues in the healthcare sector, particularly at the NTPHC Kandi.
They alleged that several doctors posted at the health centre are not available on duty and are instead working elsewhere, severely impacting healthcare delivery in the area.
