Junior Assistant held by ACB for taking bribe

JAMMU, Apr 6: Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) today arrested a Junior Assistant posted in the Social Welfare Department at Billawar in Kathua district for allegedly demanding and accepting Rs 3000 bribe from a complainant.
An ACB official said the accused, identified as Des Raj, had allegedly sought Rs 10,000 for releasing financial assistance under the State Marriage Assistance Scheme for the marriage of the complainant’s daughter, scheduled on April 16.
He said after negotiation, he agreed to accept Rs 5,000.
According to him, the complainant had already paid Rs 1,500 earlier, while the accused was demanding an additional Rs 3,000 for releasing Rs 50,000 assistance under the scheme.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, he said, the complainant approached the Anti Corruption Bureau, following which a discreet verification was conducted that confirmed the allegations.
Accordingly, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered at Police Station ACB Jammu and investigation was initiated, the ACB official said.
He said during the investigation, a trap team was constituted which laid a successful trap and arrested the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe amount in the presence of independent witnesses.
He was immediately taken into custody and the bribe money was recovered from his possession on the spot, the ACB official said.
Meanwhile, searches were also conducted at the residence of the accused at Kishanpur in Billawar in the presence of a Magistrate.
Further investigation into the case is in progress.
