JAMMU, Sept 27: Demanding celebration of the Surgical Strike anniversary as per the UGC notification in this regard, NSF activists and Jammu University students held a protest demonstration on the campus and disrupted Display Your Talent event, here today. .
The students were irked over alleged denial of the university authorities to celebrate the occasion notwithstanding a UGC circular to all universities to celebrate 29th September as ‘Surgical Strike Day’.
The trouble erupted when some students approached the Dean Students Welfare with an application to celebrate ‘Surgical Strike Day’ by undertaking activities like a special parade by NCC units and inviting Ex -Servicemen to sensitize the students about the sacrifices made by the armed forces in protecting the borders.
As the Dean Students Welfare allegedly refused to accord permission for celebrating the occasion on the campus, the students turned infuriated and resorted to protest. Shouting slogans, they disrupted the ongoing ‘Display your Talent’ program and held a demonstration under the leadership of Saket Singh Rathore, Manmohan Singh, Vikas Badhoria and others.
Later, sensing the mistake committed in denying permission to the students, the office of Dean Students Welfare issued a circular in the evening announcing that Lt Gen (Retd) Goverdhan Singh Jamwal will deliver a lecture on September 29 with an objective to sensitize students about the sacrifices of Armed forces.
When contacted, Dean Students Welfare Prof Parmeshwari Sharma said that the decision to organize a lecture for sensitizing students about sacrifices of Armed forces was already taken and hence there was no question of according permission for another programme on the occasion of Surgical Strike Day.
