JAMMU, June 25:  To reflect on the relentless struggle and supreme sacrifice of Shaheed Bhagat Amar Nath for the cause of downtrodden sections of the society, the Jammu University SC/ST Employees Association organized a special meet for paying floral tribute to the Shaheed.
Association President R L Kaith threw light on supreme sacrifice of Bhagat Amar Nath from Batote, who rose to eminence as a leader of the Scheduled Castes people of Jammu and Kashmir. “The key note of his movement had been to secure for the Scheduled Castes people maximum rights and to get adequate representation for them in the then State Cabinet and Government services,” he added and recalled how Bhagat Amar Nath sat on hunger strike in front of Civil Secretariat and breathed his last on 1st June, 1970.
The Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir State was silent over any provision relating to reservation in services and posts for the Scheduled Castes but consequent upon the sacrifice made by Bhagat Amar Nath, provision for reservation of appointments and posts in favour of these castes was felt a prime necessity by the Government, Mr Kaith added.
He further said that Shaheed Bhagat Amar Nath l always be remembered as a man of action and straightforwardness in the history of the State.
Others who spoke in the meet, included  Surjeet Singh Heer, Surinder Kumar Shavotra, Des Raj Nandan, Paras Ram Sarmal, Milkhi Ram Malhotra, Mohan Lal, Sukhdev Bhagat, Shahnaz Akhter, KunjLalBhagat, B R Angral, Pardeep Kumar Shavotra, Choudhary Shah Alam and Mulkh Raj.
