JAMMU, Aug 27: The Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP), University of Jammu, organized one day workshop on the theme ‘Specially Abled Persons: Issues And Challenges’, to ‘Make Inclusion a Priority with Specially Abled Persons’, here today. The main objective of the workshop was to document the problems and challenges faced by specially abled persons, especially in academics and employment awareness regarding facilities provided by University of Jammu and review of existing policies for such persons.
The workshop was conducted in two sessions. First session addressed three lectures cum interactive session. Dr Sarika Manhas, Associate Professor, Department of Home Science (Human Development) focused on how University of Jammu is involved in the field of Disability and the facilities provided by University for specially abled students.
She also detailed the provisions under different Acts safeguarding the rights of specially abled persons.
Supriya Kohli, Deputy Director (Adm), Directorate of Social Welfare highlighted existing policies by State and Central Government currently available for the benefit of the specially abled people. She also provided necessary websites and portal for further use.
An effort was made in third part of 1st session to document challenges faced by specially abled persons. The students from the University also participated in the deliberations. Sandhya Dhar, Umesh Sharma and R Bhan explained various issues related to specially abled students, their parents and NGOs working in this direction.
They also emphasized that many bills and provisions which are available for specially abled at the Centre level, may also be extended to the State.
Second session gave glimpse of specially abled achievers in their field, who against all odds, fought and achieved a position in the Society.
SSEIP facilitated Surinder Raina, S Chandeep Singh Sudan, Deepak Raina and Shivani for their incredible success besides being specially abled. Prof Neeru Sharma, Chairperson, Campus Post Committee, Department of Home Science, JU, was chief guest on the occasion. Prof Jasbir Singh, Director CSSEIP, delivered welcome address while vote of thanks was presented by Dr Neharica Subash. The workshop was coordinated by Dr Archana Bhat.
