JAMMU, Dec 3: The Law School, University of Jammu, today organized an international one day seminar in collaboration with Development And Justice Initiative( DAJI), New Delhi and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on the theme ‘Refugee law and protection practices in India’.
William Tall, the Chief of Mission for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in India and the Maldives, was key resource person of the seminar.
Talking on the issue, he said that almost 42,000 people get displaced every day. The alarming situation in Middle East and the refugee crisis has only aggravated the human plight, he said and pointed out the issue of providing a sense of dignified life to refugees, their protection from persecution and integration with their families as the greatest challenges being faced by UNHCR. He dwelled on the International response to the refugee crisis at different levels.
MLC Ashok Khajuria, who was chief guest on the occasion, highlighted the complexity of the issue of refugees at different levels and in different contexts. He stressed upon the need to have more deliberations and discussions to address the issue of Refugees at national and international levels.
JU Vice-Chancellor, Prof RD Sharma, while speaking on the occasion, emphasized on the need for looking beyond the existing conventions as they have proved unsatisfactory. He evoked the spirit of ‘Vasudav Katumbakam’ and ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ as the guiding philosophy of Indians and projected this spirit as an answer to the growing problem and plight of refugees throughout the world.
Raveendran Himadri, Director DAJI delivered the Introductory address and made the audience aware of the different dimensions of International Refugee law.
Guest speakers, namely Prof K L Bhatia, Director Dogra Law College and founder Director of JU Law School; B L Saraf, Retd Sessions Judge were the guest speakers on the occasion. They gave detailed presentations on different facets of Refugee problem at International level in general and Indian in specific.
Dr Seema Sharma was the programme coordinator for the event. She in her presentation gave an overview of refugees in India.
Director of The Law School, Dr Sanjay Gupta, presented the welcome address.
Dr Seema Rohmetra, Sr Assistant Professor and co- convener of the seminar, presented formal vote of thanks.
The proceedings of the event were conducted by Dr Monica Narang, Sr Assistant Professor and Dr Navdeep Kour, Assistant professor of the Law School.
