JU Law School, DLSA convene awareness session on Human Rights

JAMMU, Dec 10: The Law School, University of Jammu, in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Jammu, organized an awareness programme on Human Rights.
The programme featured a keynote address by Prof K L Bhatia, Founder Director of The Law School, who served as the chief guest. Prof Bhatia elucidated the Indic vision of human rights, drawing from his extensive writings and research to frame a jurisprudence centered on the expectations of the common citizen. He emphasized the critical role of budding lawyers as instruments of social engineering, tasked with transforming legal frameworks to meaningfully realize “our everyday essentials” for all.
His address was followed by a book donation ceremony, during which he contributed a collection of his significant works to the institution’s library.
Sunil Kumar, Sub-Judge/Secretary of the High Court Legal Services Committee, highlighted systemic efforts toward legal accessibility. Maleeka Sharma, Sub-Judge/Secretary of DLSA Jammu, detailed pivotal legislation and welfare schemes operated under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), designed for the protection and upliftment of vulnerable and marginalized communities.
The session commenced with a welcome address by Dr Monica Narang, Associate Professor, The Law School, and a poignant documentary screening on human rights challenges. Advocates Deepali Arora and Uma Kapahi, serving as Resource Persons, delivered insightful addresses that bridged theoretical law with practical advocacy.
A central highlight was the interactive session, adeptly facilitated by Dr Shubha Vats and Dr Vandita Sharma. The proceedings were conducted by Dr Upasana Sharma, Assistant Professor, The Law School, and concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr Nitan Sharma, Assistant Professor at the institution.
The session was also graced by the presence of faculty members including Dr Palvi Mathavan Puri, Dr Ramesh Kumar, Dr Sudesh Tripathi, Dr Kartika Bakshi, as well as Para-Legal Volunteers Sahil Khosla and Ravinder.
