NEW DELHI, Jan 28: Former Member of Parliament from the Union Territory of Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, today called on Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Government of India, in New Delhi and submitted a series of important representations concerning the preservation of Buddhist education and the sustainable development of tourism in Ladakh.
During the meeting, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal (JTN) apprised the Union Minister of long-pending and critical issues affecting Ladakh’s cultural institutions, monastic education system, and tourism-dependent economy, and sought the Ministry’s guidance and intervention for their early and favourable resolution.
The memorandum sought recognition of Drepung Gomang School as a Feeder School of CIBS, Leh, regularisation of 35 long-serving contractual Gompa Teachers, upgradation of Duzin Photang School (DPS), Zanskar to Higher Secondary Level, enhancement of air connectivity and flight capacity to Leh for Summer 2026 to curb exorbitant airfares, addressing adverse international travel advisories impacting Ladakh, strengthening sewage treatment and waste management infrastructure in Leh, early operationalisation of the simplified registration portal for hotels and guest houses, and immediate attention to public conveniences, stray dog management, and solid waste systems.
JTN stressed that tourism, being the backbone of Ladakh’s economy, must follow a community-centred, locally owned, and ecologically sensitive model to ensure sustainable growth without compromising Ladakh’s fragile environment and cultural identity.
The meeting also held a constructive discussion on broader issues concerning cultural preservation, Buddhist heritage, and responsible tourism development in Ladakh. Jamyang Tsering Namgyal expressed confidence that the Minister’s guidance and support would help strengthen institutional frameworks and secure sustainable livelihoods for the people of the region.
