Joti takes over as new CEC, says priority is to ensure free, fair polls

 

NEW DELHI:   Achal Kumar Joti, who today took over as the 21st Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of the country, assured that his first priority would be to ensure free and fair elections.

    He succeeded Nasim Zaidi who demitted office yesterday. Talking to reporters, Mr Joti said, “The Commission’s priority is that no voter is left behind.”

   “The poll panel will promote e-governance in the coming elections,” he said.

    Mr Joti, who is a former Chief Secretary of Gujarat, was appointed as the Election Commissioner on May 7, 2015. He retired as Gujarat Chief Secretary in 2013, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of the state.  Born on January 23, 1953, Mr Joti, a 1975-batch IAS officer, will be the CEC till January 17 next year.  The Assembly polls in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh would be during his tenure.
