Recently, human bones were accidentally discovered after 25 years at the closed electrical crematorium at Jogi Gate cremation ground, unveiling the irresponsible and inhuman side of those in charge. The only electrical crematorium in Jammu and Kashmir had been closed down decades ago due to technical issues and was mainly used for cremating unclaimed bodies. It is suspected that some bones in powder form may have been left behind in the chamber of the electrical crematorium. The Mayor of Jammu City conducted a surprise inspection of the Jogi Gate cremation ground and discovered the bones as well as the ashes of about 100 unknown individuals stored in the cremation ground’s store room. He personally collected the ashes and sent them for immersion in the Gupt Ganga (Devak) following proper Hindu rituals. The Mayor also ordered for the cremation ground to be cleaned and maintained properly, including the replacement of old taps and the removal of scattered clothes and other debris, along with the removal of weeds and bushes from the area.
The Jogi Gate cremation ground in Jammu City is in a dilapidated state and lacks basic facilities. Practically, this cremation ground has become an experimental lab for JMC, first electrical crematorium fiasco and then demolition of the main cremation shed. As one of the oldest cremation grounds in the city, the JMC must explore technological advancements and install another electrical crematorium for hassle-free and eco-friendly cremations. The basic amenities must be provided at the cremation ground, given its heritage value. The Mayor’s recent visit to the Jogi Gate cremation ground is much appreciated and has brought hope for much-needed renovation and facilities at the heritage cremation site.
