JAMMU, Sept 16: In view of the recent floods and waterlogging, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Dr Devansh Yadav, today visited Ward Number 56, Gangyal-Babliana area, to assess the situation and listen to public grievances.
During the inspection, the Commissioner reviewed the condition of the main nallah passing through the area, which residents said has been a recurring source of flooding.
People told him that every monsoon, the drain overflows and water enters over 200 houses, causing damage to property and forcing families to evacuate.
They pointed out that the low height of the drain walls and encroachments along its banks are the main reasons for waterlogging.
Elderly citizens and school children, they said, face severe hardships whenever heavy rains hit the locality.
The Commissioner assured residents that JMC is committed to providing a permanent solution. He directed the engineering staff to demarcate the drain and begin work on widening and strengthening its walls at the earliest.
He also asked officials to ensure the work is completed before the next monsoon season.
Appealing to residents, the Commissioner urged them to extend cooperation and remove encroachments voluntarily, stressing that drainage problems cannot be resolved by the Corporation alone.
Dr Yadav said people’s participation is equally important for widening and cleaning operations to succeed.
Alongside structural measures, he directed the Health and Sanitation wings to intensify cleanliness drives and anti-waterlogging activities in the affected areas.
The JMC Commissioner said sustainable drainage solutions would greatly improve living conditions in Gangyal-Babliana and adjoining localities.
The Commissioner was accompanied by former Deputy Mayor Baldev Singh Billawaria, Joint Commissioner (Works) Firdous Ahmed Qazi, Health Officer Dr Vinod Sharma, UEED Executive Engineer Ashwani Khajuria, Executive Engineer Division 5, Yasir Bashir Kichloo, Chief Transport Officer Dharamveer Singh and others.
