JAMMU, Nov 23: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has launched a fresh effort to protect traditional water bodies, starting with the restoration of an old pond near Shiv Mandir in Ward 68, Greater Kailash.
The foundation stone for the project was laid today by MLA Dr Narinder Singh in the presence of JMC Commissioner Dr Devansh Yadav.
During the event, Dr Narinder Singh urged residents to take active responsibility for conserving traditional water sources.
He said that such ponds are an important part of the region’s heritage and stressed the need to promote rainwater harvesting to improve groundwater levels.
He appealed to locals to adopt sustainable habits that ensure the preservation of natural resources. As part of the developmental works, the Jammu Municipal Commissioner, Dr Devansh Yadav handed over 300 streetlights for installation across the ward.
He said traditional ponds hold both cultural and environmental value and have long supported local communities.
He requested people not to pollute these water bodies and encouraged them to help maintain and expand such restored sites.
Dr Yadav also directed officials of the Electric Wing to identify dark stretches in the ward, especially areas where women, senior citizens, and children face problems during late hours.
He instructed the team to install the new streetlights at the earliest to improve safety and reduce incidents involving miscreants and drug addicts.
The event was attended by Joint Commissioner (Works) Firdous Ahmed Qazi, Executive Engineer Division 5 Yasir Bashir Kichloo, Executive Engineer (Electric) Simar Pal Singh, Chief Transport Officer Dharamveer Singh, and several local residents, including senior citizens and women.
