Srinagar, Jan 18: As the J&K Medical Council (JKMC) tightened its noose around doctors practicing in J&K without adhering to set guidelines, several such practitioners have approached the council for registration.
Officials told ‘Excelsior’ that outside doctors practicing in J&K have begun the process of registering with JKMC, with several applications already received.
“Over 30 doctors have applied for registration with the JKMC in the last few days. These include those who are already registered with other medical councils through reciprocal registration,” said Dr. Salim Khan, President of the JKMC.
Additionally, local doctors with postgraduate qualifications are also applying for Additional Qualification Registration to practice as specialists, officials added.
Notably, JKMC has adopted a stricter stance on registration, particularly targeting doctors from outside J&K, seeking adherence to the guidelines regarding their practice.
Explicit directives have been issued to such practitioners, urging them to register before commencing practice, in accordance with National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines.
“It is encouraging that outside doctors practicing in J&K have started registering with the Council. Local doctors with postgraduate qualifications are also applying for Additional Qualification Registration to practice as specialists,” Dr. Salim stated.
The Council has also instructed healthcare facilities, including hospitals and clinics, to ensure that only registered doctors are allowed to practice so that the patient interests are safeguarded.
Doctors, whether in public or private setups, have been directed to display their registration numbers and use QR codes to enable patients to verify their credentials.
Dr. Salim emphasized that patients have the right to know whether their consulting doctor is a registered medical practitioner and qualified to treat them.
