Srinagar Aug 11: The Jammu and Kashmir Employees United Front today demanded regularization of temporary employees working in different departments of the Union Territory and announced a protest program in Jammu and Srinagar on August 21 to press for their demands.
Talking to media persons here the Front leaders highlighted the grievances and demands of the casual workers, who have been serving in various departments for years without regular wages. “Government has engaged around 61, 000 workers in different departments like PHE, Forest, PWD, PDD, etc during the last two decades for the smooth functioning of these departments, but they were never paid regular wages,” spokesperson JKEUF, Sajad Ahmad Parray said, adding that the families of these workers are facing immense hardships because of irregular wages.
He lamented that the successive Governments have ignored the genuine demands of these employees and made their lives miserable. “We were expecting that the present dispensation of UT will appreciate the plight of daily wagers, but the issue of regularization remains unsettled. In order to fight for the legitimate rights of employees particularly the issue of regularization of 61, 000 daily wagers and bring them under minimum wages act it was felt that joint efforts of the trade union of J&K are unavoidable,” he said.
The front has threatened to intensify the protest if the government fails to fulfil their demands. “A peaceful sit-in will be held at Srinagar and Jammu in case the Government continues to ignore the issues they will intensify protests,” Parray, said.
