JAMMU, Aug 31: Jammu & Kashmir Dairy Farmers Association (JKDFA) has expressed grave concern over the widespread destruction caused by recent heavy rains and flooding in Jammu, which has led to a significant loss of livestock and plunged dairy farmers into distress.
The Association has urged both the Union Government and the J&K Government to declare the cattle loss as a ‘National Disaster’, ensuring immediate relief, compensation and long-term rehabilitation for affected farmers. “The unprecedented floods have caused the tragic death of large numbers of cattle. Dairy farmers are facing severe distress and need urgent support,” JKDFA leaders said in a press conference today.
Alongside the loss of cattle, the Association highlighted a critical shortage of feed and fodder in several districts due to hampered road connectivity. It appealed to authorities to restore connectivity at the earliest and arrange for emergency supplies, including wheat straw and corn silage, to prevent further livestock suffering.
In a significant move, JKDFA announced the termination of its former president Sandeep Singh Chib and members Vikas Jolly and Sahid Afzal for what it described as anti-association activities and financial irregularities.
The Association further informed that it has been reconstituted with a renewed leadership team to ensure transparency, accountability, and a stronger voice for dairy farmers across the Union Territory.
The JKDFA leaders announced that the 3rd edition of its flagship livestock event, Pashu Mela 2025, will be held in November. The event will bring together farmers, veterinarians, agri-entrepreneurs and industry stakeholders to exchange knowledge, explore innovations and promote livestock development in the region.
JKDFA reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of dairy farmers during crises while building a sustainable platform for their future growth.
