JKCCTU holds Delegate Conference, highlights workers’ concerns

JAMMU, Feb 22: Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Committee of Trade Unions (JKCCTU) held its 5th Delegate Conference at the Forest Convention Centre, Jammu, with over 175 delegates and observers from various Government departments, employees’ associations, and unorganized sector workers participating from across the Union Territory.
The conference was presided over by a panel comprising Mohamad Maqbool, Dr Shashi Pal Singh and Haji Ghulam Mohamad while Surinder Kumar, convenor of the reception committee, welcomed the delegates.
Inaugurating the conference, Jose Prakash, general secretary of the All India State Government Employees Confederation (AISGEC) highlighted issues such as rising prices, unemployment, wage cuts, and diminishing labor rights, while also condemning the privatization of public sector services.
JKCCTU president and national secretary of AISGEC, Mohamad Maqbool, addressed the gathering, stressing the challenges faced by workers post the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of J&K into two Union Territories. He expressed hope that the newly elected J&K Government would restore the old pension scheme, and formulate a wage and regularization policy for temporary workers.
General secretary Gurmeet Singh presented a report detailing the challenges faced by the working class at international, national, and regional levels, along with an overview of JKCCTU’s activities over the past three years. The report was discussed by 15 delegates and was unanimously adopted. Several key resolutions were also passed, addressing issues such as wage and regularization policies for power sector workers.
The conference was attended by veteran trade union leaders, including Sachin Tikoo, convenor of the coordination committee of electricity employees and engineers, who extended their support to JKCCTU’s cause.
The event concluded with the election of a 41-member State Executive Committee and 13 office bearers to lead JKCCTU in the coming years. The newly elected leadership includes Mohamad Maqbool as president, Gurmeet Singh as senior vice president, Dr Shashi Pal Singh as general secretary and Shareef-ud-din as treasurer.
