POONCH, Nov 4: In an effort to curb unscientific waste dumping near the Poonch River, a delegation from the J&K Climate Action Group (JKCAG) led by its chairman Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat today called on Deputy Commissioner Poonch, Ashok Kumar Sharma.
The delegation called for immediate measures to implement segregated door-to-door waste collection in select municipal wards to prevent further ecological damage.
Dr Muzaffar is also a petitioner in the ongoing Poonch river pollution case before the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
He presented a detailed plan urging municipal authorities to begin waste collection in a segregated manner and process biodegradable waste separately.
The members of JKCAG including Lokesh Sharma, Sardar Dilbagh Singh and Syed Abbas, suggested shifting the municipal waste processing site to Salotri near the Line of Control (LoC).
Following the presentation, the DC assured that segregated waste collection would be initiated from select wards, with biodegradable waste lifted thrice a week.
He also agreed to separately process poultry, fruit and vegetable waste, as well as sanitary waste like diapers and sanitary pads.
The Deputy Commissioner directed the CEO MC Poonch to begin implementation at the earliest and promised necessary financial support.
Social activist Ajaz Sofi, RTI activist Mushtaq Ahmad Lone, water expert Bilal Ahmad and others also participated in the meeting.
The meeting was attended by ADDC Poonch Pankaj Magotra, CEO Municipal Council Poonch Khalil Banday and other senior officials.
