JAMMU, Dec 6: The Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL) presented the moving play “Zakhmi Khwahish” under its weekly theatre series Saptahik Rangdhara at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu. Written by acclaimed playwright Kulwant Manhas and staged by the Himalayan Folk Theatre and Musical Group, the play delves into themes of love, loyalty, and moral dilemmas within a fractured family.
The narrative follows Aslam, whose life is devastated after a tragic accident on his wedding night leaves him paralysed. His young bride, Tabassum, struggles between marital duty and suppressed desires. Encouraged by Aslam, she interacts with Saleem, leading to emotional entanglements, while Kouser, the devoted maid, confesses her love for Aslam but tragically loses him within moments. The story raises thought-provoking questions about a woman’s right to seek a new beginning when fate denies her a fulfilling married life.
The performance featured powerful portrayals by Anil Koul (Aslam), Diya Parihar (Tabassum), Mansi Rajput (Kouser), Dazy Bazaz (Begum) and Arun Sharma (Saleem). Direction was by Kulwant Manhas and Jatinder Jotshi, with music by Sunil Sharma and set design by Rahul Pandita.
Following the performance, the team was felicitated with a memento by Dr. Javaid Rahi, Divisional Head JKAACL Jammu and Anil Tickoo, Assistant Cultural Officer. The event underscored JKAACL’s dedication to promoting meaningful and thought-provoking theatre in the region.
