J&K seeks Army assistance for rescue, relief operations

SRINAGAR :  The Jammu and Kashmir government has sought the assistance of Army for conducting rescue and relief operation works in the Kashmir valley, where flood warning has been issued as the water level in river Jehlum and its tributaries is flowing above danger mark due to incessant rains.
Army and men from NDRF played an important role along with local youths to evacuate the flood hit people from the valley in September last  year when several lakh houses and business establishments were damaged.    A defence ministry spokesperson said the civil administration had reached out to Army for rescue and relief operations in Srinagar and Pulwama Districts.    He said Army was keeping a close watch on the flood situation and 20 columns with rescue boats and other equipment have been kept on alert to deal with any situation that may arise due to rising water levels.    He said Army was assisting the civil administration in flood control measures in Baramulla since yesterday and a relief operation was under progress in South Kashmir to rescue people trapped in collapsed houses.    Army engineers are also undertaking strengthening of identified weak spots on the bunds of Jhelum river near Sonwar in Srinagar.
“Army has assured civil administration of all possible assistance in this time of crisis,” he said. (AGENCIES)
