SRINAGAR: Refusing to succumb to any separatist and militant pressure, 58 per cent voters exercised their democratic right in 16 assembly constituencies spread over Baramulla, Pulwama and Badgam districts in the Kashmir valley today.
Barring few minor incidents, stone pelting and a minor blast near a polling booth hours before the start of polling, the voting remained by andlarge peaceful.
To ensure free, fair and peaceful polling the authorities had taken unprecedented security arrangements and taken about 400 known trouble makers and former militants and supporters of boycott call into preventive custody.
During the electioneering 26 people, including 11 security personnel and eight militants, were killed in these constituencies, where authorities had set up 1781 polling stations. (AGENCIES)
