J&K HC orders CBI probe into cricket scam

SRINAGAR:Jammu and Kashmir High Court today ordered a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the cricket scam in which former chief minister Farooq Abdullah is one of the accused.     The court had reserved the judgement  on a petition seeking probe into the scam involving more than Rs 110 crore.
A division bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice, N Paul Vasanthakumar and Justice B L Bhat directed the probe agency to conduct an inquiry into the scam within six months.      Dr Abdullah, who is heading the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association for the past several decades, was recently replaced by Sports Minister Moulvi Imran Raza Asnari. However, Dr Abdullah got a stay from a court in Jammu.
Dr Abdullah, president of the opposition National Conference (NC) and other accused are charged with is appropriating funds and operating many bogus accounts on behalf of Cricket Association.
The scam surfaced during the previous coalition government of NC and the Congress headed by then Chief Minister and his son, Omar Abdullah.
However, normal police inquiry was ordered into the scam.     Dr Abdullah denied the allegations that he was involved in any scam. (agencies)
