SRINAGAR:
Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (GPC) elections were held today in Jammu and Kashmir after a gap of over 13 years with Sikh community showing enthusiasm to elect their representatives to run the affairs of their religious places.
“GPC polls were held across the state in a peaceful manner with 55 to 60 per cent voters exercising their franchise to choose their representatives among hundreds of candidates,” officials supervising the elections said here.
They said the voters thronged the polling booths in large numbers since morning and elected their representatives.
The officials said the highlight of the election was the unopposed election of all the 11 members in Poonch district.
Similarly, nine candidates were elected unopposed in Budgam district, four in Udhampur and three in Srinagar, they said, adding in rest of the constituencies there was a tough fight between the contesting candidates.
Expressing satisfaction over the peaceful conduct of the elections, All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina said it was heartening to note that community elected new faces, replacing the old body which had developed self-interest and were placing obstacles in the conduct of the elections over the past 13 years.
