Jammu and Kashmir’s resounding success at the National One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024-clinching the Gold Medal in States (Category B) for the second consecutive year-is more than a symbolic victory. It reflects the Union Territory’s sustained commitment to nurturing its indigenous industries, preserving cultural identity, and driving economic empowerment at the grassroots level. The ODOP initiative, launched to promote district-specific products across the nation, has become a dynamic platform for states and districts to showcase their unique offerings and entrepreneurial spirit. This year’s award ceremony at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, was an embodiment of India’s growing recognition of traditional craftsmanship, local innovation, and decentralised economic planning. The scale of competition-641 applications from 587 districts, 31 States/UTs and 23 Indian Missions Abroad-underscores the exceptional nature of J&K’s achievement. Winning in such a highly competitive and diverse field is a testament to the effectiveness of policy execution and community participation within the UT.
Beyond the overarching state-level recognition, the Silver Medals awarded to Pulwama (Category A – Agriculture) and Ganderbal (Category B – Non-Agriculture) are equally significant. Pulwama, known for its saffron and apple cultivation, and Ganderbal, with its non-agricultural heritage products, have not only showcased their distinct identities but also brought national attention to the potential of rural economies in J&K. These accolades highlight that development does not always have to be urban-centric; it can-and should-be rooted in local strengths.
Such recognition brings with it tangible benefits: improved branding, enhanced market access, and increased investment potential. More importantly, it serves as motivation for other districts to focus, innovate, and elevate their local industries to national and global levels. Strategic planning, awareness campaigns, and sustained promotion will be key to maintaining this momentum. The Government deserves credit for creating an enabling ecosystem for such success. Their vision, combined with the hard work of district administrations and local stakeholders, is transforming J&K’s economic narrative. As the Union Minister rightly stated, the continued promotion of ODOP products will uplift artisans, weavers, and farmers. J&K’s performance sets a benchmark, offering a blueprint for inclusive and sustainable development anchored in local excellence.
