J&K Assembly’s Unified Stand

Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a chilling terrorist attack in Pahalgam which claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists, leaving a scar on the hearts of the people and deepening the region’s long-standing struggle with violence. However, in the aftermath, the political leadership of the UT took the right step by moving a resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. At the core of the resolution was an unequivocal stand against terrorism, a commitment to restoring normalcy, and a determination to protect the values of Kashmiriyat, which embody peace, unity, and inclusivity. The resolution expressed profound anguish over the attack and paid homage to the victims, including the remarkable sacrifice of Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a pony ride operator. While the emotional weight of the resolution was significant, the deeper political and social ramifications of such a public stance cannot be ignored. It is not just a political declaration but a necessary call to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the nation as a whole to unite in the face of terror and divisiveness. This response by the UT Government indicates a decisive shift towards fostering communal harmony in the face of attempts to disrupt it. But beyond the surface, the resolution touches on a larger challenge: to translate all efforts into lasting peace in a region that has seen decades of violence.
The resolution’s most striking aspect is its appeal to unity. The call for collective action against terrorism and divisive forces is not merely a political gesture but a reminder of the challenges Jammu and Kashmir faces. The recent terrorist attack, like many before it, is seen as a calculated attempt to fragment society along communal lines. The resolution specifically warns against falling into the trap of divisive rhetoric, a sentiment that is particularly crucial in today’s highly polarised climate.
The call to the media to act responsibly is another important note. In the age of instant information and social media, it is easy for misinformation and inflammatory content to spread like wildfire. It is essential to resist the temptation to fuel passions that can lead to further violence and distrust. Furthermore, protecting Kashmiri students and citizens living outside the UT is the need of the hour.
CM’s comments in the Assembly also hold significant weight. By emphasising that the fight against terrorism can only be won with the support of the people, he presents a critical insight into the nature of the insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir. His statement that “militancy will finish when people are with us” reflects an understanding that violence cannot be eradicated purely through security measures. A long-term solution requires the trust and cooperation of the people-trust that can only be built through honest governance, social cohesion, and economic development.
Importantly, tourism forms the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, and incidents like the recent terror attack can ruin an entire season. The impact on Kashmir’s tourism sector is already evident, while Jammu’s tourism industry is also suffering significantly. A wave of cancellations of advance bookings has begun, and the negative effects are expected to linger for a long time. Seeds of mistrust have been sown, and unless the political leadership handles the situation with maturity and care, stability will be difficult to restore. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir faces other pressing challenges, making it even more critical to avoid any further social fractures. Firm and decisive measures are urgently needed to strengthen security and prevent such attacks in the future. The protests and acts of solidarity across towns and villages reinforce that the people of Jammu and Kashmir, despite their hardships, remain committed to peace and communal harmony. For Jammu and Kashmir to move forward, it will require not just political will but a shift in the collective mindset of its people. The Government’s role in this is crucial, but so too is the responsibility of every individual to foster a climate of unity and peace.
