JHS holds meet to deliberate on heritage of Jammu region

JAMMU, Apr 21: A meeting of the Jammu Heritage Society (JHS) was held under the chairmanship of its President Bhuvneshwar Gandotra to deliberate on heritage of Jammu region on the World Heritage Day.
It was pointed out by the members that despite the big claims of the Government no proper mechanism is in place for preservation of heritage of Jammu Region.
While speaking, Gandotra said that the most famous and prestigious heritage Mubarak Mandi complex, the erstwhile seat of power of Maharajas is not being restored on war footing. He added that it is also strange that the amount sanctioned for the illumination of outer water of Mubarak Mandi facing river Tawi stands transferred to the Smart City Project and no headway has been made so far to complete it.
He further stressed that no serious efforts are being made by the authorities for promoting heritage sites in Akhnoor like Pandav Guffa, Jia Pota, Kameshwar Temple, Ambaran and Akhnoor Fort.
Gandotra requested the Government to promote historical and religious tourism by restoring and showcasing forts of Jammu. He added that the beating retreat ceremony started at Suchetgarh border should be on daily basis.
He said that the demand of the society to create a pre-partition railway station near Kala Kendra and start a Toy Train from Bikram Chowk to Suchetgarh has not been accepted so far.
Gandotra requested the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha to look into the promotion of heritage sites.
Among others present were Sanjeev Kalra, Ashwani Arora, Sanjay Gupta, Amit Goel, Baldev Khullar and executive members Vinod Malhotra and Sanjay Sethi. General Secretary Ajesh Rohmetra conducted the meeting.
