JAMMU, Sept 3: Jammu Central Mahajan Sabha (JCMS) has appealed to the Government to release compensation at the earliest for people in Jammu who have suffered massive losses due to the recent cloudburst and floods. The Sabha said the relief must be on par with the assistance extended during the 2014 Kashmir floods, without any disparity in treatment.
Addressing a meeting of office bearers, JCMS president Romesh Chander Gupta said the calamity has caused huge destruction of lives and properties, leaving people in severe distress. He noted that though Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a rehabilitation package during his recent visit, social organizations and stakeholders were not involved in discussions, despite their crucial role in relief and recovery.
Gupta urged the J&K administration and the Lieutenant Governor to base compensation strictly on ground realities and actual losses verified by authorities. He stressed that timely disbursal would give affected families much-needed relief to rebuild their lives.
Highlighting key concerns, he said the disruption in drinking water supply is adding to the suffering of the public and called for immediate streamlining of the service on a war footing. He recalled that former Governor Jagmohan had committed to round-the-clock drinking water availability in J&K, which should now be implemented in letter and spirit.
The Sabha also pressed for urgent settlement of insurance claims. Gupta said insurance companies must be directed to release at least 90 percent claims for vehicles damaged in the floods, including those of transporters and traders, so that victims are not forced into prolonged hardships. He expressed hope that rehabilitation and compensation would remain a key priority for the Government in the coming days.
The office bearers who were present in the meeting included Shiv Partap Gupta (senior vice president), Sanjay Mahajan, (general secretary), Subash Gupta, Surinder Gupta, Atul Gupta, Kulbhushan Gupta, Vipan Gupta (vice presidents), Ramesh Gupta, C P Gupta, Balbir Gupta, Darshan Gupta, Vijay Gupta and Arun Gupta.
