JAMMU, Jan 22: The Jammu province Bachao Manch (JBM) today expressed deep concern over the ongoing transformation of Jammu, once known as the “City of Temples,” into a hub for liquor and drugs, which is having a profound negative impact on the youth.
Addressing a press conference, Ashok Sharma, Chairman of JBM said, “The rise in substance abuse has led to a worrying trend of addiction, with many young people succumbing to the lure of these harmful substances.”
“The people of Jammu are left astonished and perplexed. They are questioning why the previous administration pushed to turn Jammu into a ‘Liquor City,’ despite strong and continuous protests from the public against the opening of wine shops in every nook and corner of our city,” he said.
Sharma said, “Many families have been destroyed due to the misguided policies of the administration. The repercussions of these decisions are irreversible and the damage done to the lives of our youth is immeasurable.”
He expressed his deep concern about the lack of accountability in the administration and urged the authorities to take immediate action to curb the growing menace of substance abuse.
Sharma also criticized the Indian Government for its inaction on the long-promised restoration of Statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
“The Union Government promised to restore Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, yet there has been no progress on this front. Statehood must be restored at the earliest, along with the Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) to protect the rights of the original inhabitants of Jammu and Kashmir. This delay is causing irreparable damage to the people and their rights,” he emphasized.
Dr Kuldip Sharma strongly condemned the rampant corruption within the administration.
“Corruption is eating away at the very fabric of our society. It is time for the Government to establish a ‘Lokpal’ to ensure transparency and accountability in governance. The people deserve a system that works for them, not one that exploits them,” he said.
Among others who were present during the conference included Ch Gharu Ram, KYS Manas. Hari Om Singh, Satsh Poonchi, Kamalpreet Singh, Shak Mohd, Ashwani Sharma, Prinka Sharma, Nishu Rajput Rakesh Singh, Verinder Sharma, Satpal Sharma Principal (retd), Darbari Lal, KS Manas and Arjun Sharma.
