JAMMU, May 5: Prominent social activist Jayesh Gupta today met with the Commissioner of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Devansh Yadav in the latter’s office and projected pressing civic issues that have been increasingly impacting the quality of life for residents in the city.
Central to Gupta’s discourse was the alarming state of the city’s drainage systems, which he articulated as having deteriorated markedly due to insufficient maintenance practices. He pointed out that this neglect has resulted in conducive conditions for mosquito breeding, thereby presenting significant health risks to the community.
Gupta urged the JMC Commissioner to prioritize and expedite the cleaning of the drainage systems, emphasizing the critical need for effective water flow and the prevention of silt accumulation that can exacerbate flooding and related hazards. Furthermore, he proposed a more sustainable long-term solution which entails covering the drains to mitigate these issues.
In addition to his concerns regarding drainage, Gupta also articulated apprehensions regarding the inadequate illumination of public spaces, specifically noting that approximately 80% of street and park lights are currently non-functional. Gupta implored the JMC to take immediate action to restore and enhance the lighting infrastructure to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.
In a noteworthy development during this meeting, a memorandum was presented to the JMC Commissioner, which was endorsed by the signatures of over 200 concerned residents.
The JMC Commissioner gave a patient hearing to Jayesh Gupta and assured him that all outlined concerns will be addressed within a span of 15 days.
