Jayesh flags alarming gaps in healthcare infra

JAMMU, July 20: Renowned social and political activist Jayesh Gupta has raised serious concerns over the crumbling healthcare infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, citing severe shortages in faculty and medical facilities across district-level Government Medical Colleges (GMCs).
Speaking at a press conference, Gupta highlighted that despite the establishment of GMCs in districts such as Kathua, Rajouri and Doda, these institutions remain heavily dependent on GMC Jammu for patient care due to inadequate staffing and resources.
What’s more concerning, according to Gupta, is that even premier institutions like AIIMS Jammu are referring patients to GMC Jammu, indicating a deep-rooted lack of coordination and inefficiency in the region’s healthcare system. He warned that rather than supporting one another, these institutions are overburdening GMC Jammu, creating a ripple effect of systemic strain.
The overwhelming number of patient referrals has resulted in severe overcrowding at GMC Jammu. Doctors are now forced to attend to multiple patients in the time ideally meant for one, significantly compromising the quality of care. This inefficiency is pushing many patients to seek treatment outside the region, causing additional financial and emotional stress for families.
Gupta emphasized that such a scenario is unsustainable and called for immediate Government intervention. He urged authorities to strengthen district hospitals by ensuring adequate staff, equipment, and infrastructure to reduce unnecessary referrals to central facilities.
