Jammu University celebrates National Librarians Day

JAMMU, Aug 23: Department of Library and Information Sciences, University of Jammu today celebrated the National Librarians Day in online-cum-offline mode to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Father of Indian Library System, Padamshree Prof SR Ranganathan.
Dean Academic Affairs, Prof Naresh Padha was the chief guest on the occasion where as Head of the Department of Library and Information Sciences, Prof. Sangita Gupta presided over the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Naresh Padha urged to make the libraries more user friendly and apply the latest technology in providing better services to the users. He said information and technology has changed the entire scenario and we should adopt this technology to make library service more efficient. Padha also stressed on the research aspect of library sciences and asked the teachers and students to innovate new methods of making libraries more attractive with better services.
In her address, Prof Sangita Gupta threw light on the contribution of Prof Ranganathan in developing library science as an important discipline of social sciences.
Dr PK Singh, Senior Assistant Prof shared the experience of Dr Ranganathan with the library users.
Vote of thanks was delivered by Ashwin Kumar Kushwaha, Assistant Professor.
The proceedings of the program were carried out by the students of the M.Lib.I.Sc namely Izna and Ria.
Several students of the department expressed their views on the occasion regarding the importance of libraries in modern times and contribution of Prof Ranganathan.
Around 55 students joined the event online and 15 faculty cum staff members joined the programmes offline.
