NEW DELHI, Aug 26: Reiterating the Govt of India’s stand of working in tandem with various labour and trade unions to achieve the common objective of economic growth of the country, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said here today that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is very clear that whatever decisions are taken in this direction should incorporate the views of trade and labour representatives.
Jaitley was addressing a meeting of Government’s Inter-Ministerial Committee constituted under him for regular interaction with the representatives of different Central Trade Unions. The other members of the ministerial committee are Bandaru Dattatreya, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Dharmendra Pradhan and Piyush Goyal. Today’s meeting was in continuation of the last meeting held between the Union Ministers and trade union leaders on July 19.
Broadly speaking, Arun Jaitley said, there is a general consensus in favour of  strict enforcement of Labour Laws and fixation of minimum wages. In sectors which are investment-starved or investment requiring, the Government may also favour Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
In the interaction that followed, Union Ministers Bandaru Dattatreya, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Dharmendra Pradhan and Piyush Goyal exchanged views over the 12-point Charter of Demands presented by the leaders of Central Trade Unions, including Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, Indian National Trade Union Congress, All India Trade Union Congress, Hind Mazdoor Sabha, Centre of Indian Trade Unions, All India Trade Union Centre, Trade Union Coordination Centre, SEWA, All India Central Council of Trade Unions, Labour Progressive Federation, United Trades Union Congress and National Front of Indian Trade Unions.
Earlier, Secretary Labour Shankar Aggarwal presented a brief resume of the proposal envisaged by the Ministry. He said, fixation of minimum pension for workers in both organized and unorganized sectors and fixation of minimum wages were an important of the agenda. Similarly, there was also a proposal to ensure cover for workers both in organized and unorganized sector under the Prime Minister’s recently introduced social security schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Suraksha Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana.
