AWANTIPORA, Dec 14: A team of students from the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora, has won a National Award at the grand finale of the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025.
A statement said that the team, named “Team Passengers”, belongs to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE).
It said that the team was led by Mohammad Azeem Wani and included Amaan Ehsan, Faisal Hussain, Sabha Mushtaq, Tafheem Ul Haq and Uzair Riyaz, all third-year CSE students. They worked under the guidance of Dr Insha Altaf, Assistant Professor, CSE.
The statement said the competition saw massive participation from across the country, with over 72,000 ideas submitted by nearly 69,000 teams.
“Out of these, 1,360 teams were selected for the national finale, held at 60 centres nationwide,” it said.
It further said that Team Passengers represented IUST at Graphic Era Deemed to be University, Dehradun.
“During the 36-hour hackathon,” the statement said, 20 teams competed on four problem statements. After several evaluation rounds, it said, Team Passengers was declared one of the five winning teams at the centre.
It added that the team worked on a problem statement given by the Ministry of AYUSH titled “API to Bridge AYUSH NAMASTE and ICD-11 for EMR Compliance.”
Their solution focused on improving compatibility between traditional AYUSH systems and modern Electronic Medical Record (EMR) standards, helping integrate Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha practices with global healthcare systems.
Congratulating the students, Vice Chancellor Prof Shakil A Romshoo said the achievement reflects IUST’s strong focus on innovation, practical learning and problem-solving.
He added that such success at the national level highlights the dedication of both students and faculty.
The team received a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh, which was shared with Code Vaidyas from VIT Chennai, another winning team that worked on the same problem. The achievement also opens up internship opportunities for the winners.
