Srinagar, Dec 18: While it was launched a year ago under the Srinagar Smart City Limited, the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) is now fully operational in Srinagar city.
Authorities said that using the system, e-challans will be issued to traffic violators, enabling the traffic police to curb rampant violations and ensuring safe and secure travel on the roads.
SSP Traffic City Muzaffar Shah, while speaking with reporters, said the cameras, which have been installed across the city, identify vehicles using registration numbers and, with the help of software, note violations of different sorts.
“It retrieves the necessary data. The software identifies the violation of a particular vehicle with 100 percent accuracy,” he said.
The software, with the help of cameras, also logs the location and time of the violation. “After the violation is caught and verified, a message is sent to the violator for information,” he added.
The aim is to reach areas that were not accessible earlier. “The real goal is to improve traffic in Srinagar, making it safer and keeping a check on violations, ” he added.
As per further details, high-resolution cameras strategically placed at intersections and highway ramps capture live video feeds, analyzed by computer vision algorithms to identify traffic conditions, vehicle types, and potential incidents.
Sensors like inductive loop detectors and radar sensors detect vehicles at intersections and along roads, measuring traffic volume, speed, and occupancy, providing real-time data on road conditions.
The sensor and camera data are integrated into a centralized Traffic Management Center or cloud-based platform, processed in real-time by advanced software, to understand traffic patterns and potential congestion points.
The Srinagar Traffic Police, in a post on ‘X,’ urged drivers to strictly adhere to traffic rules to avoid penalties under the newly functional system.
“Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS): E-challans will be initiated against traffic violators in Srinagar through ITMS. Drive safely and follow traffic rules,” the post read.
The Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) also informed about the launch of cutting-edge Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) alongside an e-Challan system in Srinagar City.
It said that the system, a significant step in urban traffic management, is designed to improve road safety, reduce congestion and enhance traffic flow.
“This initiative will revolutionize traffic management, creating a safer and more efficient urban environment,” said Dr. Owais Ahmed, CEO of Srinagar Smart City Limited.
“The key features of this initiative includeReal-time Traffic Monitoring through advanced cameras to strategically monitor traffic for efficient management and quick incident response,” he added.
