JAMMU, Sept 18:  Intensifying drive against the ‘habitual tax evadors’, Income Tax Department today carried out surveys in several premises of Kwality and Bikano Groups in Jammu city today and impounded several incriminating documents indicating evasion of tax and subsequent investments in real-estate business.
Official sources told EXCELSIOR that on the receipt of formal complaints and inputs provided by its officers, Income Tax Department sleuths today carried out surveys in several premises of Kwality and Bikano Groups in Canal Road, Shakti Nagar and Akhnoor Road areas respectively.
The surveys, which started late in the afternoon, continued till mid night with the sleuths of the Income Tax Department, J&K Circle laying hands on several incriminating documents indicating large scale evasion of tax, sources said.
“These surveys brought to fore that there was no impact of the repeated warnings and advisories issued by the department whereby all those indulging in tax evasion were asked to put full stop on their illegal practice and pay income tax as per their exact income”, they added.
The premises, which were surveyed by the Income Tax Department sleuths include Kwality Restaurant on Akhnoor Road owned by Vinod Kumar Gupta and others and two banquet halls, Bikano restaurant, medical shop, chit fund company and trading corporation owned by Ram Lal Gupta and others, sources informed.
“All the incriminating documents, which were impounded during the raids will be put to detailed scrutiny tomorrow following which exact evasion of income tax by these groups would come to fore”, sources said. They, however, added that during the preliminary examination of such documents evasion of tax and subsequent investments in different activities particularly in real estate came to fore.
They informed that group owned by Vinod Kumar Gupta was found having invested huge undisclosed income in the construction of palatial bungalow at Garden Avenues near the B N Charitable Hospital on Canal Road.
When contacted, Income Tax Commissioner, J&K Circle, A K Thatai confirmed that surveys were conducted in the premises of two major groups, adding “we had already warned that after monitoring September 15 Advance Tax installment the Department will decide its future course of action”. He, however, refused to divulge details about the outcome of surveys.
According to the sources, the Income Tax Department has prepared a list of habitual tax evadors after closely monitoring the trend of Advance Tax payment and will make more additions in the same within next some days, which would form basis for further action against the habitual tax evadors.
They disclosed that those assessees, whose Advance Tax installment has shown decline as compared to last year are being closely monitored by the department and possibility of action against them in the coming days cannot be ruled out.
Sources further said, “several cases of real-estate investments are also on the radar of the department and soon after analyzing the trend within next some days the department will take action as warranted under the Income Tax Act”.
It is pertinent to mention here that few days back the Investigation Wing of the Department carried major raids in Jammu leading to highest ever surrender in the State.
