SRINAGAR, Nov 12: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti today condemned the Delhi blast, describing it as “deeply unfortunate” and expressing concern over reports that some Kashmiri doctors, “the cream of society,” have been named in the case.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Mufti said if the involvement of doctors is proven after investigation, “it would be a matter of great concern and something for the entire Jammu and Kashmir and the Muslim community to ponder upon.”
She urged the authorities to ensure a “fair and impartial investigation” into the incident. “I have no words to condemn the blast and the loss of innocent lives. The unfortunate part is the news of doctors’ names surfacing-people who have devoted their lives to serving others. If, after a clean investigation, they are found guilty, it would be a matter of deep shame and reflection for all of us,” she said.
The former chief minister warned that such incidents could cast a shadow over Kashmiris living outside the region. “Not only are our best minds being wasted, but such cases create more difficulties for people of Jammu and Kashmir who are studying or working elsewhere,” she said.
Mufti also criticised the alleged mistreatment of the relatives of those accused in the case, calling it “inhumane and unacceptable.” She cited an example of a doctor’s father being “dragged and blindfolded,” questioning, “What is his fault? You can interrogate the relatives, but you cannot treat them as criminals,” she said.
Drawing parallels with past incidents in Kashmir, Mufti said she understood the pain of the victims’ families in Delhi but urged the government to “distinguish between the guilty and their relatives.” “The criminals involved should be punished severely,” she said.
She added, “Their families must be treated with respect. When people in Jammu and Kashmir see mothers, fathers, and siblings being arrested without proof, it sends a very wrong message.”
Earlier, Mufti also welcomed Qaisar Sultan, a former member of Ghulam Nabi Azad’s political party, into the PDP, saying his joining would strengthen the party’s grassroots outreach and political agenda.
