JAMMU, Mar 17: In a bid to enhance students safety, the Transport Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir, Vishesh Paul Mahajan, has issued strict guidelines for vehicles engaged in transporting students to schools and coaching institutes to install CCTV cameras inside the vehicles before March 31, 2025.
The instructions, aimed at ensuring the safety and security of students travelling by private buses, vans, taxis, and other vehicles, mandate that all such vehicles must adhere to the Government’s safety regulations.
According to the new guidelines, all outsourced vehicles must be legally registered and fitted with speed-limiting devices, which should not be tampered with. Additionally, the vehicles are required to install CCTV cameras inside to monitor the safety of students. The guidelines further specify that all outsourced vehicles must be clearly marked with “School Bus/Van” in bold letters on both sides of the vehicle.
The instructions also call for each vehicle to be equipped with a first-aid kit and fire extinguisher. The contact numbers of the Police Control Room, SSP Traffic, and the concerned RTO, along with the driver’s name and contact number, must be displayed on the vehicle. Schools, parents, and educational institutions are also instructed to ensure that the vehicles do not exceed their capacity and refrain from any modifications.
The Transport Commissioner has set a deadline of March 31, 2025, for compliance with these instructions, warning that failure to do so will result in action under the Motor Vehicles Department Act.
