Srinagar, July 7: Amid allegations of medical negligence, authorities today ordered an inquiry into the death of a woman who died shortly after delivering her first child at District Hospital, Pulwama.
The family of the deceased-Tayamusa Jan (24), wife of Mohammad Ayoub Dar, a resident of Armullah Litter-has alleged medical negligence, with the hospital authorities not “outrightly denying” it but maintaining that treatment was provided as per protocol.
Speaking to reporters, the woman’s husband, Mohammad Ayoub Dar, said he brought his wife to the hospital after she experienced labour pain.
“After I brought her here, I was told she would have a normal delivery and that there was no need for surgery. She was kept under observation for two hours. After she was brought out, I was asked to feed her. Soon after that, she collapsed, and I was also asked to arrange blood,” he said.
He added that she was then taken to the operation theatre and had no pulse at that point. “I forced my way in and saw that she had no pulse and no blood pressure. After nearly an hour, I was told she would be referred to LD Hospital.”
He claimed that his wife had already died at District Hospital Pulwama and that there was no point in referring her to LD Hospital. “When we reached LD Hospital, the doctors there said she was brought dead.”
Ayoub further claimed that after performing an ECG, the doctors at LD Hospital informed the accompanying staff from Pulwama that she was already dead. “Those doctors then fled the scene,” he alleged.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner Pulwama has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the alleged instance of medical negligence.
“The committee shall determine any breach of duty or care contributing to the death of the deceased and submit the inquiry report along with recommendations within 15 days,” the order stated.
The inquiry will be chaired by the Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Pulwama, and will include the Tehsildar of Litter, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Pulwama, a consultant surgeon, a consultant gynaecologist, and an anaesthesiologist as members.
Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Pulwama, Dr. Abdul Gani Dar, said the hospital followed proper protocols and provided treatment until the patient was referred to LD Hospital.
