LEH, July 30: In a commendable effort, the Department of Wildlife Protection, Union Territory of Ladakh, rescued and rehabilitated an injured Red Fox found near Spituk Farka, Leh. On the evening of June 1, 2025, Phunchok Wangtak, Range Officer, Leh, received a call from Gonbo, a resident of Spituk village, reporting a limping Red Fox spotted in the area.
Acting swiftly, Range Officer Wangtak, along with Rescue Incharge Smanla Tsering, rushed to the location and safely rescued the distressed animal. The fox was immediately transported to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC), Leh, where Veterinary Officer Dr. Diskit Yangzom conducted a thorough medical examination.
The Red Fox was found to have sustained old wounds on its shoulder and forearm, likely caused by barbed wire or a metal chain. The injury had become infected and infested with maggots and the animal was severely underweight. Intensive care, including wound treatment, deworming, nutritional feeding, and daily monitoring, was provided over the course of a month.
Following full recovery, the Red Fox was successfully released back into its natural habitat near Spituk Farka. The department lauded the joint efforts of all involved and reaffirmed its commitment to wildlife protection in Ladakh.
