SHO Janipur ignores formal complaint, releases accused
Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Dec 10: Some inebriated youth wrongfully restrained and made attempts to cause physical harm to the Special Correspondent of Daily Excelsior Mohinder Verma at Janipur Chowk on the intervening night of December 9 and 10. However, SHO Janipur Police Station connived with the accused and released them even after receiving formal complaint from the scribe.
The journalist was on way to his residence at Maheshwar Enclave near Lohan Park Paloura at around 12 in the night of December 9 after performing his official duties when his way was blocked by three youth in a car bearing registration number JK02CW-7497.
When the scribe used the horn to seek way, the trio, who were heavily drunk, came out of their vehicle and started using abusive language. They even attempted to drag the scribe out of his car but sensing the gravity of the situation the journalist promptly locked the doors of the car.
In the fit of anger, the youth, one of whom was later identified as junior lawyer Rohan Kerni, kept on making attempts to forcibly open the doors of the car in order to cause physical harm to the scribe. The drama ended with the intervention of some persons who were standing outside the cigarette shop, which was open even at the mid-night with the connivance of the police.
The scribe immediately approached the Flying Squad of police station near Saughat Shopping Complex and even spoke to SSP Jammu on telephone apprising him of the incident. After hectic efforts, the vehicle bearing registration number JK02CW-7497 was seized and two of the unruly youth were rounded up but the third one managed to dodge the police.
In the morning, the journalist gave written complaint to Janipur Police Station with the request for registration of FIR under the relevant provisions of law against the rounded up youth as well as the one who managed to escape.
Interestingly, SHO Police Station Janipur Sikander Chouhan, who has the foremost duty of upholding the law, connived with the accused and released them from the custody on receiving apology letter that too without taking the complainant into the confidence. When complainant approached the SHO he simply said, “it was not possible for me to keep them in custody as no physical harm was caused to you”. However, there was no convincing reply from him about why the formal complaint about registration of FIR was not entertained.
In the evening, the matter was again brought to the notice of SSP Jammu through WhatsApp message but there was no response. It is really shocking that police will act only when physical injury is caused to any citizen by the unruly elements, who otherwise can go on threatening and harassing the people on the roads in the mid-night.
