JAKARTA, Aug 30: Protesters in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta tried to break down the gate outside the national parliament’s building on Saturday, a Sputnik correspondent reported.
Thousands of protesters have been rallying in Jakarta for a week to demand better working conditions and higher wages, as well as the parliament’s dissolution. The protesters’ anger shifted toward the police on Friday after a 21-year-old motorcycle taxi driver was run over and killed by a police tactical vehicle.
On Saturday, a large number of protesters defied rainy weather to gather outside the parliament building. They tied a rope to the gate and pulled it in an attempt to knock it down and break into the parliament.
On Friday night, protesters set fire to several rapid transit railway stations across Jakarta, damaged toll road terminals, and defaced a significant portion of government-related buildings with anti-police slogans.
