JAMMU, Apr 9: India created history at the 10th Sanda World Cup in Macau as Indian athlete Aparna clinched the country’s first gold medal in the Women’s 52 kg Sanda category with a dominant performance.
In the final, Aparna defeated the reigning Vietnamese world champion in straight sets to secure the gold medal. She had earlier defeated the Philippines athlete in the semi-final to enter the summit clash.
The victory carried added significance as Aparna had previously lost to the same Vietnamese opponent at the World Wushu Championships in Brazil, where she settled for a silver medal. In Macau, however, she turned the tables in emphatic fashion by winning the final in two straight sets and bringing home a historic gold for India.
The Wushu Association of India congratulated Aparna on her remarkable achievement and wished her success ahead of future international events, including the Asian Games. India will also have finalists in the Men’s 48 kg and Women’s 75 kg Sanda categories, with both finals scheduled for tomorrow.
