India now top smartphone supplier to US: Vaishnaw

BENGALURU, August 10: India has firmly established itself as a global powerhouse in smartphone manufacturing, emerging as the world’s second-largest producer of mobile phones, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said today.

Speaking at the inauguration of Metro’s Yellow Line and flagging off three Vande Bharat trains, Vaishnaw attributed the transformation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership and policies that have radically boosted the country’s electronics sector over the past 11 years.

He revealed that India’s electronics production has surged sixfold since 2014, reaching Rs 12 lakh crore, while exports have jumped eight times to surpass Rs 3 lakh crore. “More than a decade ago, it was unthinkable that India would become a major exporter of electronics,” Vaishnaw noted, highlighting the scale of the sector’s growth.

India’s rise as the top smartphone supplier to the United States – overtaking all other countries – is a key milestone demonstrating the quality and scale of Indian manufacturing. Vaishnaw said the achievement places India at the centre of the global smartphone supply chain, reinforcing international trade relations.

Bengaluru, branded as “Namma Bengaluru,” is rapidly emerging as a crucial hub for iPhone production, attracting multinational technology firms and generating employment and innovation opportunities.

The minister emphasised that the advances reflect India’s larger ambition to become a global technology leader, foster innovation, and accelerate economic growth through focused initiatives such as Make in India, increased investments, and a thriving startup ecosystem.

Vaishnaw expressed confidence that with continued government support in infrastructure and skill development, India’s electronics sector will scale new heights, playing a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s digital future. (UNI)
