SRINAGAR, June 13: Residents of Madina Colony in Behama area of Ganderbal district are facing serious problems due to an incomplete drainage project and damaged roads.
Locals said that the drainage work, started last year by the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, was left incomplete, causing severe damage to the road and leaving manholes protruding above the road surface. “This is the heart of Ganderbal. If this is the condition here, what would be the state of far-flung areas? We demand the drainage be made functional and roads repaired. If they cannot do it, let them take back the drainage pipes so the road can be fixed,” he said.

Zaina Bano, another local, said the improperly constructed drainage has made daily commuting difficult, especially for schoolchildren and patients needing hospital access. “The manholes are above the road surface, damaging the road and making it dangerous,” she said.
When contacted, Executive Engineer Roads and Buildings Ganderbal, Hamid Iqbal, said that 98 percent of the drainage work has been completed. “Only two or three pipe connections are pending, which were delayed due to internal disputes among residents. The matter has been brought to the deputy commissioner’s notice and will be resolved in a couple of days,” he said.
