JAMMU, Jan 6: Victims of alleged immigration fraud, along with Yuva Jatt Sabha Chairman Amandeep Singh Boparai today raised serious concerns over “fraudulent” immigration consultancies operating in the city and allegedly cheating youth on the pretext of overseas jobs.
Addressing media persons at Press Club of Jammu, Boparai said several young people from Jammu have been duped of large sums of money by fake consultants promising employment abroad.
He said the matter was repeatedly brought to the notice of the authorities through press conferences, protests and legal action.
Advocates Varun Anand and Uday Salaria, who are representing the victims, were also present during the press conference.
The legal team alleged that in a case involving accused Sonia Devi and Abhinandan Thapa, the Gandhi Nagar Police had initially acknowledged the scale of the fraud and recommended transferring the case to the Crime Branch.
However, they claimed the stand was later changed, first with the registration of an open FIR and subsequently a closed FIR, which has reportedly stopped new victims from being added to the case.
Boparai alleged that the accused are misusing legal provisions and have filed cases against police officials of the Gandhi Nagar Police Station, including former SHO Gandhi Nagar and an ASI, to avoid strict action.
He claimed the accused are out on bail and continue to operate their business.
He appealed to senior officers of the Jammu and Kashmir Police to personally intervene, stating that the credibility of the police force is at stake.
He demanded immediate sealing of the consultancy office in the Trikuta Nagar area and sought action to declare the accused as history-sheeters.
Boparai also urged the Deputy Commissioner Jammu to constitute a committee to verify immigration consultancies and ensure they are registered with the Ministry of External Affairs and comply with the Emigration Act, stressing that thousands of youths have been affected by such frauds.
