SRINAGAR, Jan 15: All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary G A Mir today said that if the government considers profiling of religious institutions and clerics necessary, it should be carried out across all religions, alleging that the BJP-led Central Government is selectively targeting minorities and creating divisions in the country.
Addressing a meeting, Mir said the alleged investigation of mosques and profiling of imams reflects a divisive approach. “If you are investigating mosques and imams, then you should investigate all religious places of all religions. Only then will no one be troubled. Targeting one particular religion, especially a minority, creates fear and pushes people underground,” he sai
Mir alleged that the BJP and the Central Government have, over the past 12 years, taken no steps to unite India’s diverse population. “People in this country live with different cultures, languages and religions. In the past 12 years, not a single step has been taken to unite them. Whatever steps are being taken, are full of tension and meant to spread division,” he said.

Mir further alleged that such actions are part of a deliberate design. “This is their thinking and their agenda. The regret is that some people, even from the Muslim community, are becoming pawns in this design and are misleading society,” he said.
The Congress leader also criticised what he termed the suppression of democratic rights, referring to the stopping of Congress campaigns and the detention of party workers. “Democracy and the Constitution give us the right to criticise individuals, communities, parties, and government policies in a democratic manner. If the government stops this and imprisons people, it is undemocratic,” Mir said.
On the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), Mir accused the BJP government of weakening a programme that once provided livelihood support to the rural poor and unemployed youth. “MGNREGA was a national-level initiative of the Congress for the poor. They are systematically trying to destroy it,” he said. He added that the party would continue its struggle to restore and strengthen the scheme. “This struggle will not stop. Whenever Congress comes back to power, we will bring MGNREGA back in a stronger form for the people,” he added.
