AMRAVATI, Jan 4 : All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday questioned the absence of official data on alleged “love jihad,” asking why no such information has been presented in Parliament if the phenomenon is indeed occurring.
Owaisi was responding to remarks made by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat, who on Saturday said that discussions on “love jihad” should begin within families.
Speaking at a programme in Bhopal, Bhagwat stressed the need for better communication among family members and advised women to remain vigilant, adding that a decline in family communication had led to an increase in such incidents.
Addressing a press conference in Amravati, Owaisi said that if an individual is 18 or 21 years old and legally an adult, their personal choices are protected by law and are not subject to anyone else’s preferences.
He challenged the BJP and RSS, stating, “If love jihad is truly happening, then present official data in Parliament. Provide records for the last 11 years.”
He also demanded a clear definition of what constitutes “love jihad,” asking the BJP and Mohan Bhagwat to explain the term precisely.
Owaisi further criticised the BJP and RSS for failing to address pressing national issues such as unemployment, China’s actions and the situation in Ladakh.
The AIMIM leader made these remarks while campaigning for his party’s candidates in the Amravati municipal elections.
Owaisi also launched a sharp attack on senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar, claiming that Pawar no longer has the required numbers to return to the Rajya Sabha.
He said Pawar’s term in the Upper House is nearing its end and, given the current political scenario, it appears unlikely that he will be re-elected.
According to Owaisi, changing political equations in Maharashtra are directly impacting Pawar’s parliamentary prospects.
