IEI Jammu observes World Telecommunication, Information Society Day

JAMMU, May 17: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Centre celebrated World Telecommunication and Information Society Day today with the theme “Gender Equality in Digital Transformation.”
A statement said that the event was attended by engineers from various departments and organizations, senior professionals, and committee members of IEI Jammu Centre.
It said while Minister Satish Sharma was the Chief Guest on the occasion, Manish Jain, Director, Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Government of India, Jammu, delivered the keynote address, and Anil Verma, FIE, Chairman IEI Jammu Centre, presided over the function.
In his welcome address, Anil Verma underlined the importance of making women digitally literate.
He proposed that smart phones be provided to all Anganwadi workers so they can help spread digital awareness among women and girls in their communities.
The Chief Guest, Satish Sharma, began his speech by requesting a two-minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the recent conflict with the neighbouring country.
He highlighted the Government’s efforts to bridge the digital divide through initiatives such as setting up IT parks in Jammu and Srinagar, where 50% of employment opportunities will be reserved for women.
He also mentioned plans to introduce free e-bus services for women, especially from rural areas, to help connect them with employment opportunities across the Union Territory.
Keynote Speaker Manish Jain discussed the role of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Department of Telecom in promoting digital inclusion.
He stressed that sustainable development cannot be achieved without the active participation of women in the digital space.
During the seminar, technical papers were presented by Ranjeev Sawhney, Sachin Tickoo, Joy Ganjoo, and Anil Kumar.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Avneet Gupta, Honorary Secretary, IEI Jammu Local Centre.
